Anvil! The Story of Anvil Book Review

I do not know why I had not lifted this one of the bookshelf earlier. Since that day, I made it a mission to get my hands on this book as soon as possible and 2 days ago, I finally got it. Anvil! The Story of Anvil is one hell of a read. I spent one whole day finishing this one. Anvil is a Canadian heavy metal band and many considered them the first few bands whose music paved the way for the entire genre of Speed and Thrash Metal, among those in agreement are the likes of Scott Ian of Anthrax and Lars Ulrich of Metallica.

Basically this book illustrates the journey of two friends, Lips and Robbo, childhood friends who made a vow when they were fourteen years old to rock together, for ever and they meant it. It was an emotional journey. They toured with all the greatest bands ever lived. You name it, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Scorpions and all of these bands sold millions and millions of records around the world except Anvil.

It depicts a story of staying true to yourself, staying true to your dreams, not losing hope and to do things not for the sake of doing it but for the love it. When they first stormed the scene back in the late 70's and early 80's, everybody thought that Anvil was the band that will turn the world upside down with their brand of fast and odd timing heavy metal. Though most of the lyrics are kind of sleazy, but musically they were revolutionaries, ahead of their time. They should have made it big.

Anvil remained obscure. Nobody knows about them. But they were true to their dream to become rock stars and to become successful. They kept releasing albums and do small tours. They lived for music. It takes a heart of a lion to have that kind of dedication, my friend. This also a story about friendship, a story of two heavy metal brothers staying true to each other despite their ups and downs of life. Fighting personal demons in the shape of drugs and what not. It is an emotional read. Whether they finally achieve that dream or not, that you must find out on your own if you choose to read this book.

This book came in support of the movie, a documentary made about them which goes by the same name. I have yet to watch the movie, but judging by the power of this book and the trailer I just watched recently, I know it is a must that I go and see the movie. Even by watching the trailer almost made me cry. I am a fan.

7 Ways to Attack Herpes

Herpes Simplex Virus, and particularly genital herpes, is said to affect one in four sexually active adults. I personally think the numbers might be higher, due to under-reporting of what is, for some, a very embarrassing situation.

Currently, the only prescription medication we hear about is Valtrex and even then, you hear that nothing can cure herpes and that, even with medication, you can still spread it.

If that won't put a damper on your lovelife, I don't know what will.

But there are things you can do, responsible steps you can take, to lessen both your severity and occurrence of herpes outbreaks as well as the potential for spreading herpes to another.

Seven ways to outwit the herpes virus:

1. Find out what your herpes triggers are. Your most important tool, by far, is self-monitoring. Different people have different triggers for herpes outbreaks. By paying attention, you can find out if you are more likely to outbreak from sun exposure, stress, or arginine rich foods.

2. Learn how to recognize the predome symptoms. Everyone goes at such a fast pace that it's easy to overlook the precursers to an outbreak but they are almost always there, from 24 ot 48 hours before the actual outbreak. If you can learn to pay attention to that very first tingling feeling in a previous outbreak area, that very first feeling of pain in the lymph nodes of the groin, and any feelings of heat in the area, you can take preventative steps that may avert an outbreak.

3. Avoid arginine-rich foods. For men and women into body-building, it's important to look at any weight building or sports nutrition formulas you are taking, and make sure they don't contain major doses of arginine. Even if you can take an arginine-rich formula normally, you can forgoe them during predome or stressful situations and reduce the risk of outbreak being triggered by arginine. Foods rich in arginine include peanuts, beer (I know you hate to read that one, fellas) and chocolate (the ladies hate to see that one here too),

4. Increase lysine-rich foods. Lysine tricks the herpes virus into thinking it can mate with it, in a manner of speaking, and helps neutralize it. You can also take lysine capsules. Foods rich in lysine include turkey, fish, cheese, yogurt and fresh vegetables.

5. Boost your immune system. Take a good antioxidant formula to help your immune system, which is your first line of defense against herpes, function at high alert.

6. Keep tea tree oil handy. Tea tree oil will kill the herpes virus on the surface and many find that applying the oil directly to previous outbreak areas whenever predome symptoms start can help avert an outbreak. If the oil burns, it can be diluted.

7. Use ice during predome. Another way to potentially avert an outbreak is to use and ice pack at the very first sign of predome symptoms.

This is not an article on safe sex but it stands to reason that using a condom whenever you feel an outbreak might be coming on, and abstaining altogether when an outbreak is present is smart.

Finally, remember that one in four sexually active adults have the virus so it may be that you telling him or her will open the door for them to tell you. And there are also dating clubs for people with herpes so if the prospect of having to reveal you have herpes is just too daunting, please realize you don't have to stop dating altogether just because you have herpes.

Pilates Exercises - What You Need to Know

After hearing so much about Pilates, you may have decided that you would like to give it a try. However, where do you start? Pilates isn't just one exercise; it's hundreds of them. So, you need to first decide where you'll be practicing it. Of course, there are many options available, but your budget and desired comfort level ultimately determine your decision.

There are dedicated Pilates studios available throughout several major cities and suburbs. One of the benefits of practicing in a studio is that you don't have to worry about equipment costs. The studio will provide you with any needed blankets or mats, or other common props.

Often times, the local gym in your area offers exercise classes, and Pilates may be one of them. You should check to see if there are any beginner's classes available, but also make sure the instructor is well-qualified. In case you aren't comfortable practicing Pilates in a studio or gym, you can always buy a few videos and learn the exercises in your home.

Always eat healthy meals, and clear your mind before beginning your exercise routine; these two things can greatly affect your ability to focus and your comfort level. Also, it is very important to warm up before you begin. Some of the best and most recommended Pilates exercises are the pelvic curl or clock, angel arms, and imprinting.

It is important that you learn how to properly apply such Pilates principles as breathing and concentration, and also, control flow, centering, and precision. If you are able to master these basic principles quickly, your progress with Pilates will be much faster.

Pilates can be useful for losing excess stomach fat, as it has a set of abdominal exercises just for that purpose. One of the more popular Pilates abdominal exercises is "Rolling like a ball." It's both fun and effective. Other exercises include the "Crisscross" and "The Hundred," and these as well are just as effective in producing desirable results. One thing to consider is that each of these exercise techniques requires proper breathing and a certain degree of physical movement to actually work for you.

Pilates may very well be the exercise program for you, especially if you are searching for something that is simple to do and easy on the budget.

Stylish Cellphone Wallpapers

Stylish and beautiful wallpapers never fail to fascinate young people especially girls. Their delicate patterns, fantastic compositions and distinctive flash images attract young people who are always seeking for fashion and prevalence and never miss them. Of course, people who like to decorate their telephones are also quite found of them. I am a good example, for I update my wallpapers every week. Some people even replace them on a day to day basis, which is too crazy of them. If they really replace wallpapers so often, where can a great many of them be obtained?

Don't be so surprised about that. They could download these artistic wallpapers from specialized websites for free. Apart from these free websites, some websites will charge users, for they can provide them with a wide catalog of wallpapers which are unique and personalized. Because of this, users are still willing to pay for that in order to get their expectant wallpapers. There is another way to get wallpapers. That is they can ask their friends to send wallpapers to you by telephone if they are willing to waste their money and give their friends a hand. Actually it's not a good way because what they get is limited, but really a convenient method especially for those phones that don't have EMS memory.

Some people may ask what can these beautiful wallpapers be used for? In fact, they don't have any substantial use. But they can decorate cell phone screens and they are a feast for eyes indeed. I have such experiences when a good friend of mine once opened my mobile phone, they were amazed to see my fantastic wallpaper and then spoke highly of it. At that time I felt so proud and satisfied. And I believe many users have had the same experience.

Nowadays, wallpapers have already received a warm welcome and are enjoying a high reputation. In the future, they will be widespread and will be accepted not only by the young teenagers but also by the older generation.

Breaking Routines for Empowered Conscious Change

"If you want to change your life, you have to change you life." I laughed right out loud the first time I read that statement. I didn't laugh because it was funny. I laughed at the sheer brilliance of the observation.

You really can't keep doing the same things, thinking the same thoughts, and expect somehow to wake up in a new and better world. You have to let go of your accustomed patterns of behavior and thought--as comfortable and familiar as they are--if you're going to adopt new ones. And it's that very thing that stops most of us. How on earth do you change the way you think?

Actually, it's a kind of skill. And as with most skills, the place to start is with simple things. Learning to make changes is a matter of learning to make conscious choices. And if you start with small choices, you will quickly discover how liberating, empowering, and downright fun making choices can be.

One way to begin is to decide that every day for the next week or so you'll make a small change one of your habitual routines.

To get you started, here are some suggestions:

o When you shower, start with washing a different part of your body than you normally do.

o Put your clothes on in a different order.

o Take a different route to work, or home.

o When you grocery shop, start at the opposite end of the store than you usually do.

o Park in a different area of a familiar parking lot (and remember where!)

o Eat a new food or one you haven't enjoyed for a long time and eat it without distractions.

o Eat in a different location than you normally do.

o Tune in a different station on your car radio.

o Sit in a different chair in your living room than you usually do.

o Turn off the TV for an evening.

Notice how you feel as you choose to make the change. Does the idea of doing things differently seem interesting? Does it peak your curiosity? Does it make you anxious? Or seem foolish? Notice your level of willingness to try something new.

Then, as you actually do the new behavior, pay attention to how it changes your viewpoint. Notice whether new kinds of thoughts go through your mind, whether you're feeling more aware and more observant.

Practicing "routine-busting" gives you amazing insight into how much of your life you live on automatic pilot. It lets you see the degree to which you sleep-walk through life, and wakes you up to the realization that you really can alter your experiences simply by making conscious choices.

It has other benefits, too. We associate our routines with safety; they protect us from surprises. But they imprison us, too. They blind us to new options and deafen us to our intuitions. When you experiment with stepping outside familiar patterns in small, non-threatening ways, you get a taste of the exhilaration that comes with expanding your boundaries. You find yourself looking for additional new choices you can make and paying more attention to your hunches. You open yourself to the idea that the range of possibilities available to you in any given moment is far broader than you had previously imagined. You begin to let your choice-making extend to more and more areas of your life. Your risk-taking abilities expand; you become more spontaneous and less inhibited.

"All this," you may ask, "just from taking a different route home?" Let me tell you about Joe. I don't know if that's his name, but I'll call him that. I heard his story several years ago on my car radio. Joe was retired and lived with his son. He spent his days sitting in a chair by a window, sipping whiskey, smoking, and watching TV. That was pretty much his whole life for a couple of years.

One day, while gazing out the window, Joe decided he'd go for a walk. He went out the front door, down to the corner and back. The next day, he decided to do it again, and this time he walked all the way around the block. Pretty soon he was walking several blocks. Then several miles. Then he got bored with walking and decided to see if he could run. He was pushing 70, mind you. He hadn't run in decades. But he tried it and decided that it was kind of fun.

His whiskey and cigarettes fell by the wayside, and he began running farther and farther every day. When he was 72, Joe scored the achievement of his lifetime. He won a seniors' marathon that wound its way to the top of Pike's Peak. All because one day he decided to make a little change in his routine.

I don't know what your Pike's Peak is, but I know it's out there, calling you. If you want to change your life, you have to change your life. Start small. Start today. And may glorious discoveries await you!

Do You Really Need Disaster Recovery Software?

As the person responsible at your company for the integrity and security of your data, your job is undervalued by most. The responsibility that lies on your shoulders and as long as things are going well, no one knows that you even have a job. It is only when the server goes down and everyone's connection to the internet and all of their data is lost that they actually realize what you do for a living.

Disaster recovery software is one way to make sure that no matter what happens, you will be able to resurrect the entire computer system as quickly as possible. You may not be able to do it as fast as everyone would like, but if it takes hours instead of months, people will be grateful.

If you live in an area of the country that is not prone to flooding, earthquakes, wide-scale fires, hurricanes, or tornadoes, you might not think that you actually need disaster recovery software. But, there are other types of disasters that can occur in the workplace. A broken water pipe, a malfunctioning air conditioning system, an employee with a grievance - all of these things can quickly turn a smooth-functioning office into a business that needs to shut its doors.

By installing disaster recovery software before anything happens, you will be a hero and not a scapegoat. You will be able to quickly and easily resurrect the entire computer system, back to where it was before whatever disaster struck. Without this type of software, you could end up taking weeks or months, trying to get it running again. In today's economy, no company can afford to be without their data and without their computers for that long, so make precautions and install recovery software before it is too late.

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made When Getting a Business Appraised

Most business owners will, at some point, want or need to know how much their business is worth. They will be faced with the task of finding someone to perform a business appraisal or valuation. Since this is unfamiliar territory, the owners often make some big mistakes.

Mistake #1 - Automatically Hiring Your Existing CPA Firm

Business owners often assume that all CPAs are competent in business valuation. In fact, many CPAs have very little or no business valuation experience or training. Don't expect your CPA firm to tell you if they are not proficient in this area. Firms are often reluctant to; turn down additional revenue, admit their lack of expertise, and refer you to a competitor.

Ask your CPA firm if they have any staff that are credentialed and experienced in business valuation. Then get an anonymous list of their prior business valuations by business size and type. Don't be too concerned if they have not valued a company in your same industry. Regular and recent business valuation experience is much more important. If they don't have adequate business valuation experience, ask if they would recommend a firm that does.

Mistake #2 - Automatically Hiring a Referred Professional

Referrals mean different things to different people, so you must ask on what basis it is being given. If it based on a brief meeting at a networking event, then don't give it much weight. Referrals based on reputation alone are only slightly better. Seek referrals based on first-hand dealings with the referred professional. All referrals, even high quality ones, need to be evaluated further to determine their business valuation competence.

Mistake #3 - Using Rule of Thumb Formulas

Many business owners believe there is some secret formula that can be used to accurately value their business. There are many rules of thumb and they are not a secret. Rules of thumb can be useful to get a "quick and dirty" estimate, but they have some serious flaws. No one really knows the quality and the quantity of the data on which they are based. The formulas typically use multiples that are expressed in ranges (like 1 to 2 times annual sales) that result in widely varying values. The formulas provide no guidance on how to select an appropriate number within that range. Most importantly, these formulas do not account for the unique characteristics and factors that affect the value of a specific business. If a business valuation will be given to third parties or subject to dispute, rule of thumb formulas just won't stand up to the scrutiny.

Mistake #4 - Paying Too Little

Business valuations typically cost thousands of dollars. In an attempt to save money business owners often look to get one on the cheap. There are a number of sources on the Internet that will value a business for substantially less cost. The old adage - you get what you pay for - applies here. These services use various formulas, proprietary data, checklists, and etc. to arrive at an estimate. Some even come with rather impressive looking reports. In general, these services are just high-priced, dressed-up rule of thumb formulas.

Mistake # 5 - Paying Too Much

Business valuation firms often set minimum fees and limit the levels of service without regard to the cost restraints of smaller companies. By omitting some valuation procedures that typically aren't relevant to smaller businesses and preparing summary-style reports, firms can legitimately and significantly reduce the cost of a business valuation. A high cost, full scope business valuation is often overkill for a small businesses. Look for a firm that can match your needs more closely to save money. Fees can vary greatly so it pays to shop around. Seek the best professional for the best price, not necessarily the lowest price.

By taking the time to do some basic research business owners can avoid these mistakes, hire a competent business valuation professional, and get the most value for their money.

Comox Valley Real Estate and the Comox Valley

Many different real estate blogs extol the benefits of living in one place or another but few places can actually deliver what is being marketed. The Comox Valley is one part of the world that can deliver. Our valley has a diverse real estate market, and a broad spectrum of things to enjoy within and in close proximity to the valley. As someone who came here to visit for more than 30 years, I elected to move here and enjoy what our valley has to offer - scenic beauty, a temperate climate, a controlled pace of life and lots to enjoy, including its people. I elected to do so against a backdrop of my extensive travel to Europe, Scandinavia, and throughout North America. Arguably, the Comox Valley is the greatest place to live in the greatest place on Earth. Here is why I feel this way.

The Comox Valley, for real estate purposes, falls under the authority of the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB). The Comox Valley Real Estate market is divided into the areas shown on the map at the right. The Merville/Black Creek area includes the Saratoga Beach area up to the Oyster River. The City of Courtenay is divided into Courtenay East, Crown Isle, Courtenay North, Courtenay West, Courtenay South and Courtenay City. The Town of Comox is situated on the Comox Peninsula but is differentiated from the rest of the peninsula for real estate purposes. Courtenay South includes Royston (located to the south of the City of Courtenay). Further south is the area that includes the Union Bay and Fanny Bay area down to Deep Bay.

In addition to being statstically divided into these geographic area, this market is statistically divided into single family homes, single family homes on acreages, single family homes on waterfront, single family strata, single family modular/prefab homes, condos (apartments, patio homes and town homes), half-duplexes, full duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes, manufactured and mobile homes on a pad, farms and ranches, lots, strata and waterfront lots, acreages, and waterfront acreages.

The Comox Valley is a region of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada that is located about half-way up the island on its Eastern side. The first inhabitants of this region referred to it as the "Land of Plenty", a phrase that continues to be applicable to the region today. This region comprises an area not much greater than 660 square miles and it is bordered by Mud Bay in the south, Saratoga Beach in the north, the Beaufort Mountains in the west and the Strait of Georgia in the east. Courtenay is its largest city, and Comox is its largest town.

Vancouver Island has been recognized by Conde Nast as a top North American island for many years and one of the top islands in the world. Nearby Vancouver was voted best city in the Americas by Conde Nast readers in 2010. Resorts in the area have been placed on Conde Nast travellers Gold List. After having lived here it is easy to see why.

Vancouver Island is well-known for its saltwater and freshwater fishing. From the Comox Valley you can launch your boat and go fishing for salmon, cod, snapper, halibut and other species of fish and shellfish in the Strait of Georgia. If you prefer you can fish for steelhead in a local river, fly fish for pinks from a local beach, or fish for trout in a local lake.

If you prefer to hike and explore, Vancouver Island is home to ancient coastal temperate rainforests with trees well over 1,000 years old. They are located in areas such as Cathedral Grove Provincial Park, Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park and in Clayquot Sound. Speaking of provincial parks, Strathcona Provincial park is the oldest one in British Columbia and it offers a variety of destinations, both developed and not, for the adventure seeker. Clayquot Sound is a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve.

Do you prefer to do something outdoors that is more laid back? Then try golfing at some of our championship and/or local golf courses. Or if you are more adventurous, head up to the Mount Washington Ski Resort for some alpine or nordic skiing in the winter, or mountain biking in the summer.

On many days, you can fish, ski (or mountain bike) and golf in the same day. The Comox Valley is known for its warm dry summers, mild wet winters, and year-round temperate climate. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 30 C (86 F) and winter temperatures rarely fall below freezing. Most of the winter precipitation falls in the form of rain. When we do get snow in the winter it rarely stays for more than a few days. The ocean is readily accessible from anywhere in the Comox Valley, golf courses are spread out throughout the Valley. Mount Washington is a short drive away.

If you don't like to golf, fish or ski, no problem! Our valley offers many places to eat and stay, hike, bike, swim, and camp. You can also visit a museum (and paleontology centre), a theatre (performing arts or movie), or enjoy various types of music in local clubs. You can also enjoy any number of diverse events throughout the year. These include events such as Nautical Days, the Comox Valley Exhibition, the Comox Valley Music Festival, and the Comox Valley Shellfish Festival. Enjoy a glass of wine at one of our six local wineries (some are award-emnning), or spirits at a local distillery. For fresh food, head out to our local orchards, berry and vegetable farms or farmers markets. For fresh seafood, head down to the Comox dock and buy it from one of our commercial fishers, or stay there and merely enjoy the view of the Comox Glacier from the end of the pier. You can also head down to the Comox spit and enjoy the spectacular panoramic ocean view from the beach.

These are but a few of the many things to enjoy in our Comox Valley. Come to play and you will want to stay. If you do decide to stay, the Comox Valley real estate market has just about every type of home from mobile to million dollar. There are lakefront, beachfront, oceanfront, wooded, urban and rural choices. Home type choices include single family, condos, duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, modular, farms, and ranches. The Comox Valley offers as much choice in home type and location as it does in the activities that are available for you to enjoy.

If you are looking for a scenic destination with ocean, mountains, forests and farmland a short drive away with lots to do but without the traffic and congestion of a larger city, come out to the Comox Valley for a visit and see what it has to offer. If it compels you to stay for longer as it did for me, contact me and ask about your real estate options, and relocation information.

Small Talk: Secrets of the Coversationally Comfortable

Does making "small talk" cause a "big fear" in you? Do you wish you could melt into the floor when you have to enter a room full of strangers?

There are several techniques you can use to be more comfortable. Find someone, preferably someone who is alone, and look at him or her. If the other person looks back, smile. If the other person smiles slightly, walk over.

Realize that you have something in common with everyone else in that room: you are all in the same place. Therefore, make a comment and then ask a question about the place. (You can also talk about the weather, the event, or something else you have in common, such as belonging to the same organization.)

Examples might be, "It is sure cold outside! How far did you have to go to get here??" or "This is a fabulous facility! What's in the rest of it?"

Before you walk into the room, figure out 5 open-ended questions you can ask, to encourage the other person to talk. Base them on what you and s/he may have in common, or how s/he got to this point in life. For example, "How do you know [the host]?" Another question might be, "Based on your shirt emblem, we both work for the same employer! What do you do for the XYZ Company?" One or more questions can be based on local or corporate news, so stay up to date on current events. After 5 questions, if the conversation is still awkward, it's time to excuse yourself and move to someone else.

Excuse yourself by giving a valid reason to move on, such as "I've enjoyed talking to you, but I need to meet some new people (or visit a vendor, get something to eat, etc). Have a great evening!" Smile and move away to do whatever you said in your reason.

If you are travelling on a airplane or ship, the rules need to be modified. Remember you have the experience of being on the same conveyance in common. Comment/question pairs such as "Wow - look at that sunset! What are sunsets like where you come from?" would be appropriate. You cannot move away from the other person, so watch his body language carefully for signs that he wants to end the conversation. One such sign might be lack of eye contact. If you want to end it, use a reason such as "It's nice talking to you, but I really need to finish my work." Then look at the book or papers.

There are more such rules in networking, especially in business networking, but the ones above are basic in the American culture.

These rules can be learned through books, seminars, and coaching.

Breast Cancer and Imbalance in Life

Breast cancer is a devastating experience for any women to go through.

My breast cancer was the reason for causing my life to be out of balance on the physical level.

It is amazing how these four elements co-mingle and if we lack in one aspect, it immediately reflects on our lives in a form of disharmony that can appear as a form of disease or even mastectomy as a result of breast cancer that changes the whole picture.

Picture this: Close your eyes for a moment and Imagine that you are standing on a center of a table with four steady legs. You feel comfortable. You feel safe. You can even spread your legs to two corners of the table and you are still in control and feel you can keep your balance.

Now, close your eyes again and imagine yourselves standing on a center of a table. However, this table has one broken or crocked leg. How do you feel now standing on that table? Do you feel safe and steady? Do you feel out of balance? Does fear goes through your mind that you might fall, that you would not be able to keep your balance on that table much longer?

What happen to us when one of these aspects (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) of our life is in disharmony with the rest of the elements? We feel shaky, unstable, out of balance, living in fear of the unknown.

What causes these out of balance situations and illness in our lives? The answer to this question is simple and consists of only one word: stress.

Even the modern medicine recognizes the fact that stress is the biggest factor in all diseases.

What are the causes for stress?

It comes from the way we perceive life, from our core being. It comes from the attitude that we embrace to react to every event that occurs in our life.

How do we find the balance, so we can live in harmony with all aspect of our life?

We have to be very honest with ourselves and be able to look deep down inside our "divine self" and be able to change our perception on life.

When I had my breast cancer it totally changed my set of beliefs and my attitude towards life.

Channeling the energy to other elements of life that were not functioning the way they were supposed to and gain the balance back.

To your good Health and Wealth!

Developing Young Minds for the 21st Century Job Market

How can we expect high school graduates to compete in the highly competitive 21st century job market when our education system is stuck in a pre-computer age paradigm?

Millions of school children grow up in dysfunctional households. Many go to school hungry: Many are homeless. If we expect to teach these children, we need to reach out to them on their terms, with subject matter that interests them.

Clearly, forcing them to learn spelling, vocabulary, and reading based on subject matter that they are not interested in has been a failure. But why isn't this clear to our education system? They seem paralyzed to react.

One definition of insanity is repeating the same mistake over and over, but expecting a different outcome. Today, we are seeing the effects of several generations of children who have graduated from high school, even though they cannot read nor write. Instead of receiving a diploma, they receive a "Certificates of Attendance". Just how is that supposed to help them get job?

In Florida, school grades 3-11 will be faced with the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, known as the FCATs. Note the word 'comprehensive'.

Can someone please explain to me how these students are supposed to test well when they cannot read, and as a result lack the deductive reasoning skills needed to understand test questions in the first place?

At some point these young people enter the work force totally unprepared. Sadly, many cannot even fill out a job application. What are their options?

While it easy to fault the Education System for their decades of failure to comprehend ''Deductive Reasoning", it is we who have given them a 'pass'.

Parents, teachers, educators, politicians, and job creators, if you want the education system to change, you need to unite, and demand alternatives.

Talking About Travel Medical Insurance

Travel medical insurance is normally the most comprehensive type of travel insurance you need to protect yourself and your family when taking a trip or vacation. Let's look at why.

This is an example of the coverage offered on a good travel medical insurance plan. There are more comprehensive and less comprehensive travel medical insurance plans available and the amount of protection will vary from plan to plan and from company to company.

A good travel medical plan will normally include some pretty comprehensive protection, including:

Hospital Room and Board Intensive Care Medical Expenses Outpatient Medical Local Ambulance Prescription Drugs Emergency Room Accidents Emergency Evacuation Emergency Reunion Return of Mortal Remains Return of Minor Children Political Evacuation Incidental Home Country Coverage End of Trip Home Country Coverage Common Carrier AD&D Sports & Activities AD&D Terrorism Identity Theft Natural Disaster Trip Interruption Lost Luggage

Whew it's a long list huh! All of this protection you can get for a nominal cost, something like $46.00 for a 2 week vacation (for a husband and wife ages 35 and 32). That is a really good investment both for your protection and for the peace of mind you get by knowing you are protected for almost anything which could happen.

Maybe you think you don't want to spend the money for a good Travel Medical Insurance plan. You want to get a really cheap plan.

OK, lets look at what's covered and decide what we don't need.

Let's see we could get rid of Identity Theft, but wait what if someone pick's your pocket in Italy or France and uses your id and credit cards to buy some stuff, is that worth saving $46.00? I don't think so. Why not drop the Emergency Room Accident coverage? You're not going to have an accident, are you? Remember that if you do you will have to pay for whatever treatment you get before you are released and it could be in the thousands. Really want to chance it? Also remember that you are in a strange country and sadly, if you are an American everyone knows that all Americans are rich so you could pay much more than a local citizen would pay. Why not let your Insurance company handle the payments?

Just to save a little money 1 unforeseen incident would more than pay for your Travel Medical Insurance.

You might also think that your credit cards will cover you when traveling, please check them to see exactly what is covered. Most don't give adequate protection at all, just the bare minimum.

If you think that the insurance you have in your country of residence, check it also. Most times this insurance won't cover you in other countries or if it does, again it is usually minimal.

Travel Medical Insurance, never Travel without it. The money you save by not having it is really not worth the risk.

Why I Have a Beard

Some old men have a beard. Such are called lazy old men.

Only a few women have beards. They are called freaks. They are of course not freaks. Women can make money growing a beard. Women who want to grow beards to earn money at a circus sideshow should try Rogaine®. Try not to get it into your eyes. Don't forget that sideshow gals winter in Florida.

If a man has a beard, he doesn't have to shave if he grows a mustache to go with it. With no mustache, he has only a small patch to shave. He can shave that with the little electric razor they gave him when he was last in the hospital.

Young men with beards must keep them trim and tidy unless they live here in Idaho and work at home on the farm where cows and hogs have no interest in beards. Old men never have to trim their beards unless their wife makes them.

My son and I know that beards are important in winter.

He knows better than I do.

In ten-below-weather he is the one out in a dairy corral standing behind the cows. His feet are slipping around on frozen cow manure. His arm is up to the shoulder in a cow in the pregnancy-check position.

In the winter, my son can preg-check a string of 300 cows much faster than in the summer. In the winter the only thing that is warm is the arm he has stuck in the cow.

That's why my son likes a beard in the wintertime.

A few years ago my son was called to a church position that required that he not wear a beard. He showed the local leaders pictures of early important church leaders with beards a foot long. That didn't work. Then he said that he was over 30-years-old and had to wear a beard in the tradition of his early Jewish forbearers. They said that his Welch and English ancestry was most likely not Jewish and that he would have to get rid of the beard.

He froze his poultices off that winter.

With all that, it's time to tell you why I grow a beard. Here are my reasons:

1.I'm a lazy old men.

2.It keeps my face warm in the winter (especially if I'm indoors).

3.My wife likes it. Other women say that they like it too while shaking their heads.

4.Some men like it except the ones who can not grow a decent beard. These are the local Piute Indians and the Chinese guy down the street that serves the "Ptomaine Special."

5.It proves I can grow hair other than in my ears and my nose.

6.Squirrels have a place to hide their nuts.

7.It is a haven for small song birds that eat the crumbs my beard collects when I eat. Last year I counted 17 species of warbler. One was a (rare in these parts) Cerulean Warbler.

8.It gives me something to tug on while I'm having deep thoughts or making grandiose plan.

9.It sops up my drool.

10.It's the only thing that I can do that my wife can't (without Rogaine®.)

There are pitfalls of having a beard. You must watch what you are doing when you are cutting your own hair. Last summer I was cutting my hair when I noticed that a small lawn mower had passed through my beard leaving a swath not easily repaired. I tried to balance the beard, first on one side and then on the other. Pretty soon I had no beard left to repair.

I suggest you have your wife cut your hair.

The Purpose of Metal Detectors

Metal detectors are quite useful. They have many uses in many different fields, some of which include: the military in mine fields, airports and other security checkpoints, geophysical prospectors, and beach-combers.

The metal detector is also included in the detector radar family, because many use radar in their systems. Other members of the detector radar family include: car radar detector systems, weather radar systems, and cordless radar systems.

Metal detectors are made up of an oscillator that produces an alternating current that passes through a coil, which creates an alternating magnetic field. This means that when an electronically conductive metal is near the detector, it creates eddies of air, which causes a change in the magnetic field, which enables the operator to see where the metal is.

Handheld detectors are the most common, and are used in the majority of cases. Even land mines can be detected through the use of handheld devices. However, for really deep metals, ground penetrating radar is used in conjunction with the metal detector to unearth the hidden metal.

The metal detector has an interesting history. The first metal detectors were created in the late 19th century. The original inventors of the idea hoped to be able to create easier methods of finding ore for miners. One physicist, Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, invented the induction balance system in those days, but it took a hundred years for others to see the need for his idea.

Early machines were difficult to use, and took a lot of battery power. In the 1930's, the modern one format began to emerge. Gerhard Fisher is the first patented inventor of the metal detector. He discovered metal detecting quite by accident, when he found a discrepancy in his radio navigational methods. His model was used in WWII, yet afterwards, when there were surplus detectors lying around, the hobby of finding metal for entertainment was formed.

It is a very useful and entertaining tool. It is hard to imagine someone never having seen one. Nearly everyone has come in contact with metal detectors at least once. It is an interesting fact that the such a detector is part of the detector radar family.

This is due to the fact that many detectors use a cordless radar system in their mechanisms. The metal one also has an interesting history, and thinking about it the next time you're standing at a security checkpoint will give you something to ponder to pass the time.
